CAYAMBE SUMMIT EXPEDITION

Description

The Cayambe summit expedition is perfect for high altitude beginner climbers to gain experience and build confidence at altitude. At 5790 m, Cayambe is the third highest mountain in Ecuador and a challenging mountain to climb. During the first three days, you will acclimatize during hikes to lagoons and volcanoes near Cayambe. For those who are have little experience on glaciers, your guide will spend a day reviewing glacier techniques. On summit day, you will be tied into your guide who will be breaking trail. We will organize everything so you can focus on reaching the summit.

Tour Cost (based on 2 clients minimum)

  • 1095 per person (USD)
  • 30% deposit required to make a booking
  • Balance to be paid by EFT at least 7 days before departure

Each guest must please bring their passport.

It is compulsory for guests to have personal medical aid & travel insurance.

This tour is NOT recommended for travelers with heart, lung or back problems.

Travelers should excellent physical fitness.

Cayambe Summit attempt clothing: 

Down jacket, hard shell jacket, fleece jacket, base layer, hard shell trousers, inner fleece or base layer trousers, long fleece socks, inner wicking socks, stiff-soled or semi rigid double mountaineering boots, beanie, inner fleece gloves, outer hard shell mitts and buff.

Acclimatization hikes

Loose comfortable clothing, comfortable walking/hiking shoes, rain jacket and fleece are needed.

Additional items: 

Your passport, sun protection cream (UVA 50+), cap/hat, sunglasses (factor 300-400), camera and 2 x 1.5 L water bottles, personal toiletries 

Mountaineering

30-40 liter backpack, crampons, walking axe, helmet, glacier goggles, harness, 2 x locking biners, 2 x prussiks (6-7mm, 1m each), ski poles and headlamp (and spare batteries).

Day 1 – Cuicocha Lagoon (3400m)

Our journey starts in the morning with a transfer to Otavalo. Here, you will enjoy a slow 12 km acclimatization hike around the beautiful Cuicocha Lagoon. 5 hours between 3200 – 3450m. Accommodation at Hosteria Riviera Sucre (or similar) in Otavalo (3200m).

Day 2 – Cerro Fuya Fuya (4200m)

Today you will take a 4-5 hour hike up Cerro Fuya Fuya near Mojanda Lagoon. You will be hiking between 3800m to the summit at 4200m. Accommodation at Hosteria Riviera Sucre (or similar) in Otavalo. After the hike, you can choose to relax or make a visit to the Peguche falls.

Day 3 – Imbabura (4630m)

Today is a big day out with a long hike up Cerro Imbabura. It usually takes around 8 hours between the altitudes of 3300-4 630m. Accommodation at Hosteria Riviera Sucre (or similar) in Otavalo.

Day 4 – Refugio Oleas Berge (4650m)

In the late morning we will drive up to Cayambe Volcano. After a lunch, we can take a short hike to a viewpoint over the Hermoso glacier. Accommodation at Refugio Oleas Berge (4650m).

Day 5 – Glacier School on Cayambe (4700m)

In the morning, we review glacier and crampon techniques. Later in the afternoon, we will start preparing for the summit attempt. Accommodation at Refugio Oleas Berge.

Day 6 – Cayambe summit attempt (5790m)

Summit bid starts at 1 am. The climb to the summit and back takes around 8-9 hours. Return to Quito after lunch in the town of Cayambe.
