CHIMBORAZO EXPEDITION

Climb the highest mountains in Ecuador and walk above the clouds on the Chimborazo Expedition. Gain valuable high altitude experience and take your mountaineering skills to the next level. The Andean mountain range in Ecuador is the perfect training environment. Here you will be able to climb peaks that are technically straightforward with easy access. Each day you will be able to acclimatize slowly by hiking around beautiful crater lagoons and up easy 4 000 m peaks. You will also learn all the necessary alpine climbing skills in a relatively safe environment on the glaciers of Cayambe. Afterwards, you can test your newly acquired skills when you climb Chimborazo (6 268 m) and Cayambe (5 790 m).

Who will lead the Chimborazo expedition?

An IFMGA/ASEGUIM certified guide with perfect English speaking skills will lead the Chimborazo expedition. WE also contract assistant guides IFMGA or ASEGUIM (Ecuadorian equivalent) who speak excellent English.

Climbers should have excellent physical fitness.

Day 1 (Mon-16th) – Arrival

Arrival in Quito (2800m). Airport pick up and transfer to your accommodation. Rest and equipment check in afternoon. Short acclimatization walk in Parque Metropolitano (2900m) if you wish to stretch your legs. Accommodation in the La Casa Sol (or similar). 

Day 2 (Tue-17th) – Quito City & Equator Tour

Enjoy a guided tour of Quito’s fascinating Historic Center and the Intiñan museum on the true Equator. We end the afternoon with a walk up el Panecillo (2900m). From the top you can see the whole of Quito North. Night in La Casa Sol (or similar). Welcome dinner.

Day 3 (Wed-18th) – Cuicocha Lagoon

Transfer to the indigenous town of Otavalo in the morning. Otavalo is famous for its high altitude volcanic lagoons. We will spend the next 4 days here slowly acclimatizing while exploring these crater lagoons and volcanoes. You will be staying at the same hosteria/hacienda in the countryside. Here you can relax and enjoy the Ecuadorian landscapes.

Today you will hike around the beautiful Cuicocha Lagoon. It is an incredible 5 hour (12km) walk between the altitudes of 3200 – 3450m. Accommodation at hacienda La Luna (or similar). Talk on acclimatization and AMS by the head guide. Sleeping altitude is around 3200m.

Day 4 (Thur-19th) – Cerro Fuya Fuya

In the morning, you will take a short hike from Mojanda Lagoon (3800m) to the summit of Volcan Fuya Fuya at 4200m. On the summit, you can enjoy a picnic lunch with views over the crater lagoon and Cotacachi. In the evening, we will prepare a barbeque (or braai) at the hosteria. Night at Hosteria La Luna (or similar).

Day 5 (Fri-20th) – Cerro Imbabura

Today is a big day out. We rise early, to tackle Volcan Imbabura (4630m). It is an interesting hike with a nice scramble on the broad crater rim to the summit. Here we will rest and have lunch before making our way back down. You will be hiking for around 8 hours between the altitudes of 3300-4630m. Night at Hosteria La Luna (or similar).

Day 6 (Sat-21st) – Otavalo Market

Rest day! In the morning, you can explore the famous “Saturday market” in the town of Otavalo. The afternoon can be spent relaxing or rock climbing on a local crag. We will also revise rope work and knots for those who are a little “rusty”. Night at Hosteria La Luna (or similar).

Day 7 (Sun-22nd) – Glacier School

The excitement starts to rise with our 4×4 drive to Volcan Cayambe in the high Andes. It is a beautiful drive up through a green countryside with grazing alpacas. After arriving at the refuge (4650m), we will sort out our accommodation and have a quick snack. We then take a short walk to the Glacier Hermoso (4650m) on the Equator to learn necessary alpine skills. Night at Refugio Oleas Berge.

Day 8 (Mon-23rd) – Glacier School

The morning will be spent ice climbing on the glacier. In the afternoon, we will make final preparations for the summit attempt and take a short rest. Night at Refugio Oleas Berge.

Day 9 (Tue-24th) – Cayambe summit attempt

Cayambe summit (5790m) attempt starts at 1 am! It is a 8-9 hour return journey. The summit is amazing with views over nearby Antisana. Night at Hacienda Loma Larga (or similar) in Cayambe at 2800m. Christmas Dinner festivities!

Day 10 (Wed-25th) – Riobamba

Sleep in and enjoy a late breakfast. In the early afternoon, we will drive through the famous “Avenue of Volcanoes” to Riobamba (4 hours). Its an awesome drive with volcanoes like Cotopaxi, Illinizas and El Corazon flanking the Pan American highway. Night at La Esperanza (or similar) (3800m).

Day 11 (Thur-26th) – High Camp on Chimborazo

Mid-afternoon transfer to Chimborazo NP. Hike to high camp (3 hours). We will use porters to carry tents, food and water. Night in tent at 5300m. You will need to carry your own personal items such as clothing, gear and sleeping bag.

Day 12 (Fri-27th) – Chimborazo summit attempt

Chimborazo summit (6280m) attempt starts at 12 AM. This will be the hardest climb of the life. You climb for 8-10 hour up a glacier to Ventimilla summit and then traverse to the Whymper summit, the highest point in Ecuador at 6280m. After a safe descent, we pack up and return to the hacienda in Riobamba. Night in hacienda La Esperanza (or similar).

Day 13 (Sat-28th) – Extra summit day

Extra summit attempt (in case of bad weather) or rest & relax/rock climb in a valley near Riobamba. Night in Riobamba at Hacienda La Esperanza (or similar). Celebratory dinner with traditional delicacies.

Day 14 (Sun-29th) – Transfer to Quito or extension

Transfer to Quito or extension to Baños de Agua Santa for “rest and relax” or adventure activities.

Summit attempt clothing: Down jacket, hard shell jacket, fleece jacket, base layer, hard shell trousers, base layer trousers, long fleece socks, inner wicking socks, stiff-soled or semi rigid double mountaineering boots, inner fleece gloves, outer hard shell mitts, beanie and buff.

Acclimatization hikes: Loose comfortable clothing, comfortable walking/hiking shoes, rain jacket and fleece are all that are needed.

Personal clothing: Denim trousers, t-shirts etc are fine for days when you are relaxing. The weather in the cities is fairly warm during the day, and cool to cold at night. For nights pack a hoodie or soft shell jacket to wear when relaxing. A thin down jacket will also work well.

Mountaineering: Crampons, walking axe, helmet, glacier goggles, harness, 2 x locking biners, 2 x prussiks (6-7mm, 1m each), ski poles, headlamp and spare batteries.

Additional items: Sun protection cream (UVA 50+), cap/hat, sunglasses (factor 300-400), camera and 2 x 1.5 L water bottles, personal toiletries
